Small wind turbine · 3 kW class

3 kW small wind turbine

The workhorse for farms, guesthouses and small businesses: 6,000 kWh a year, three-phase output, and a tower you can service with a standard ladder and harness rather than a crane.

  • 3 kWRated power
  • 3.0 m/sCut-in wind
  • 3.8 mRotor
  • IP54Nacelle

At 3 kW the electrical side changes. Output can be 400 V three-phase, which means the turbine can feed a workshop panel or an irrigation pump directly, and the inverter no longer has to be a single-phase unit limited by the local supply.

Mechanically it is still a direct-drive machine with passive furling, deliberately: the failure modes of a small turbine are almost always in the gearbox, the slip ring or the yaw motor, and this design has none of the three.

Design details

3.8 m rotor, 11.3 m² swept area

Optimised for 5–7 m/s sites; the power curve stays flat to 13 m/s before furling begins.

400 V three-phase option

Feeds a workshop distribution board or a pump directly; no phase balancing on a weak single-phase supply.

18 m tower available

For shelter belts and orchards where the first 12 m are turbulent.

Two-year spare-parts kit

Blade set, bearings, controller board and brake resistor kept in stock for this frame size.

Where it is used

Farms and agri-business

Irrigation pumps, milking parlours, grain dryers and cold rooms running on 400 V.

Guesthouses and rural tourism

Cuts the diesel generator hours to near zero between April and October.

Schools, clinics, small industry

Micro-grid anchor machine where a diesel generator is the only alternative.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 3 kW and 5 kW models?
Same nacelle family, different rotor (3.8 m vs 5.0 m) and winding. The 5 kW produces about 60 % more energy at the same site and needs a 15 m tower minimum; the 3 kW is easier to permit and cheaper to install.
Does it need a permit?
In most rural jurisdictions a tower under 15 m and a turbine under 5 kW falls under a simplified notification, not full planning permission. Check with your local authority — we supply a drawing pack and a noise statement to support the application.
How long does installation take?
Two people, two days: one day for the foundation (concrete cure takes longer), one day to assemble and raise the tower and commission the controller.
