Vertical axis wind turbine · 50 kW class

50 kW vertical axis wind turbine

Community-scale H-rotor. 132 m² of swept area, a generator at the base of the mast, and a rotor that keeps producing through the 90° wind shifts that make a tail-vane machine hunt all afternoon.

  • 50 kWRated power
  • 2.2 m/sCut-in wind
  • 11 mRotor
  • IP55Nacelle

The GH-H50K turns an 11 m diameter, 12 m tall rotor — 132 m² of swept area — on a 15, 18 or 24 m free-standing tower. Five aluminium blades with three inner blade layers, a disc-type coreless PMG at ground level, electromagnetic brake with optional mechanical lock. Cut-in 2.2 m/s, rated 11 m/s, survival 45 m/s, 45 dB(A) at 10 m.

On a 5.5 m/s site it produces about 85,000 kWh a year. The commercial case is almost always diesel displacement: a 50 kW genset burning 12–15 litres an hour costs far more per kWh than this machine, and on an island or a mine the fuel logistics cost more again. The H-rotor layout means the generator, controller and brake are at the base — no 24 m nacelle work, no crane for routine service.

Design details

11 m × 12 m rotor, 132 m² swept area

Five blades in three sections each, assembled on site. Blade height and diameter both scale, so the rotor keeps a low aspect ratio and stays structurally stiff.

Ground-level generator and switchgear

All service items within 2 m of the ground. For an island or a mine, that is the difference between a local technician and a flying engineer.

45 dB(A) at 10 m

Low tip speed and no gearbox. The machine can sit 60 m from a dwelling where a 50 kW HAWT would need 150 m.

45 m/s survival, IEC-style load case

Blades and tower designed for a 45 m/s gust with the rotor locked. Not typhoon-rated: for 59.5 m/s exposure choose the GH-D50KW.

Where it is used

Island and village grids

Two units, 60 kW of PV and a 200 kWh battery replace a 100 kVA diesel set on a small island grid, with the diesel kept for calm weeks.

Mines and remote industry

Displaces 40–60 % of genset fuel on sites where the wind is gusty and the load is flat, without a crane on site for service.

Wind-diesel retrofits

The controller accepts a diesel-off signal and curtails output on low load, so the retrofit does not need a new grid-forming inverter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 50 kW vertical axis wind turbine cost?
USD 42,000–56,000 ex-works with generator and controller; USD 95,000–128,000 installed with tower, foundation, cabling and grid interface. Per kW it is 15–25 % more than the GH-D50KW horizontal axis machine.
Why choose this over the 50 kW horizontal axis model?
Only for site reasons: turbulent or reversing wind, a 45 dB boundary limit, a height cap, or a preference for ground-level maintenance. On an open site with a prevailing wind, the GH-D50KW makes more energy for less money and we will say so in the quote.
How long does installation take?
Foundation 7–10 days including curing, tower and rotor erection 3–4 days with a 50 t crane, commissioning 2 days. The rotor is assembled on the ground and raised as one piece where the site allows.
What happens in a storm?
The controller brakes the rotor and locks it above 38 m/s, and the blades are designed for 45 m/s locked. Above that class the machine is outside its rating — that is why typhoon-exposed sites are quoted the GH-D series instead.
